The Spring of Life

"Yes, he loved cursing, and it came [back] upon him; he delighted not in blessing, and it was far from him. He clothed himself also with cursing as with his garment, and it seeped into his inward [life] like water, and like oil into his bones. Let it be to him as the raiment with which he covers himself and as the girdle with which he is girded continually." (Psalm 109:17-19)

There is huge power in our words! We speak words and those words determine what is happening in the spiritual realm around us. We can't see it, but we actually WEAR what we SWEAR! When I worked on cruise ships... gosh, I swore worse than a sailor. My roommate was a tomboy Dutch girl... and in the end even she got enough of my swearing. My favorite swear word was "bloody"... which I managed to pop into each sentence I spoke. I wonder what my spiritual garment looked like back then?! One thing I can say, I got more and more sick when I was on the boats... until I just had to leave. At the time I did not put the two and two together, but now I am sure it was my own words that got me more and more sick! Those swear words got into my inward being and wreaked havoc there! ...and my health started to steadily deteriorate.

Very soon after leaving the ships I dedicated my life to the Lord. I did not even think about having to quit swearing. It just disappeared. One day I noticed that I did not use one single swear word. They were gone from my life.

Psalm 104:2 says: "[You are the One] Who covers Yourself with light as with a garment." God has a garment of light... and so do we when we are His! We might not see it in the natural, but it is clearly seen in the spiritual realm. Devils and demons see clearly our garment of light. They know also that their influence is very much limited due to our garment of light.

We put on this garment of light through our words. When we stay in the Word of God, speaking the promises of God over our lives, our garment of light becomes more bright and covers greater area around us. When we speak the Word of God over our lives... and then at times speak some sickness and disease and some poverty and lack over our lives, there are holes in our garment of light... which are openings to the enemy. Our garment of light is intact when we agree with God's promises and won't speak any negativity over our lives.

It is so, so important to fill our hearts/spirits with the Word of God for otherwise negativity will be pushed down into our hearts. It is all around us. Then when an emergency situation happens - during which very often our minds go completely blank - only our hearts/spirits are actively involved, pouring out what they've been filled with... settling the situation.

My friend had an incident when she and her husband were driving on an ice road (we have ice roads between islands in winter) and suddenly their car completely lost control and started spinning. She was really grounded in the Word of God and the first words that came out of her mouth were Jesus help us! The moment she shouted those words, the car came to an abrupt halt. She said that it seemed like someone was standing in front of the car, stopping it.

But think, if she had not shouted out the name of Jesus that is the name above every name in heaven and earth and under the earth... but had shouted out something like "damn". The car sure would not have stopped and they probably would have ended up in a serious accident. It is a serious matter what we fill our hearts with, for in an emergency situation when our minds get disengaged, what is in our hearts comes out of our mouths, settling the matter.

Sometimes again it takes years and years of building the garment of curse around us and then when a disaster suddenly attacks, God can't help us. We have taken a long, long time to carefully build the garment of curse around us and it rules over us. It is like the story of a man who talked since his childhood that he was not going to live to be 40... and guess what, he did not live to be 40.

I find that a lot of people actually have some kind of vision or knowing that they are going to die young. I had it too... until I found out that it was a very common lie of the devil. When he can make us believe his lie, he can make sure we die young. This man who talked that he was not going to live to be 40 was a Christian. No one told him that it was a lie of the devil... so, he continued to believe it. So, when he was finally in a coma, Kenneth Hagin was called in to pray for the man. He prayed, but he kept sensing that something was wrong. He asked the Lord what was wrong and He showed him that this man had set the spiritual laws in motion years ago, "calling those things that be not as though they were" (Romans 4:17) and no prayer of another person was able to reverse what he had prophesied over his own life. Had he been conscious, he could have broken the power of his own words, but he was unconscious... and he died. I know other similar stories...but I won't get into them at this time.

God's Word has power. We can literally build a strong wall of protection around us when we take time to do it. One of the very, very best protection and healing promises is Psalm 91. When we take time to pray it over our lives and the lives of our family members, it builds a wall of protection around us. Then when an emergency comes, there is a spiritual law already set in motion to protect us. This is the Psalm that has kept hundreds of thousands of soldiers safe in war. I know stories about the whole villages of women praying during the war over their husbands the Psalm 91 and they all came back home safe.

Chaplain and captain of the 10th Mountain Division in Fort Drum, N.Y. Al Downing says: "Each night at 8 o'clock, we prayed Psalm 91 for the protection of our troops and soon we stopped seeing our people killed in action. Before we started these prayers, we were sustaining as many as four to five casualties each week. After we started praying Psalm 91, they ceased. We didn't have any more casualties."

This is the reality. I remember when my own good friend's brother was in Iraq a few years ago and we prayed the Psalm 91 over him every day, he said that every night other men came back to the base with their helicopters being full of bullet holes while his helicopter had almost no holes in it. It was the supernatural protection of God that surrounded his helicopter. No bullets could go through it.

I know other stories of US troops praying Psalm 91 over themselves daily... and all coming back from Iraq safely. It is vital to us at this time to build the powerful protection of the Lord around ourselves and our families. We do not see it in the natural, but in the spirit realm we are like in a bubble.

Another story comes to my mind about 9/11. Dan and Ann Stratton's church in New York, was right next to those twin towers. As the Lord had put it on Dan's heart to teach about the supernatural protection and Psalm 91 to his congregation, he had taught it for months before the disaster. He had also put on Dan's heart to pray for New York. Dan did not know why, but every morning he woke up earlier and prayed for New York. When the disaster suddenly hit, not one single person was lost from his large congregation... and I believe many more were protected because of his prayers. There was a man from his congregation, Jim, who was in the office during the accident. He got out after the first plane had hit the building. He wanted to stay to help someone, but the Lord told him to immediately run into the subway. Jim hesitated, but then ran and it was the last moment before the next plane hit the other building. There are so many testimonies of believers being in a safe place when the planes hit the twin towers, believers who were supposed to be in those buildings or close by. Like one of the members of the same congregation was not in the office because her neighbor had asked her to receive a furniture delivery for them, as they themselves could not have been at home at the time. Another man's daughter had asked for a very specific sandwich for lunch and he went out of his way to get it...

God can protect us when we have taken the time to build the hedge of protection around us through His Word. Literally no harm can touch us then for the Psalm says: "For [then He will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence. [Then] He will cover you with His pinions, and under His wings shall you trust and find refuge; His truth and His faithfulness are a shield and buckler. You shall not be afraid of the terror of the night, nor of the arrow (the evil plots and slanders of the wicked) that fly by day, nor of the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor of the destruction and sudden death that surprise and lay waste at noonday." ...by the way, there are a lot of "sudden"s in the Bible... predicting that a lot of disasters will attack suddenly... and then we do not have the time to grab our Bible and start praying the Psalm of protection over us... we need to have this Truth so in our hearts that in an emergency, this is the first thing that comes out!

There is a funny story about a lady who was attacked at night and the very first thing that came to her mind was: "I am covered with His feathers!" which she shouted it out to her attacker... and to her great surprise he turned and ran. She was surprised, but I bet that man actually saw the angels with her and feared for his life.

The Psalm continues: "A thousand may fall at your side, and ten thousand at your right hand, but it shall not come near you. Only a spectator shall you be [yourself inaccessible in the secret place of the Most High] as you witness the reward of the wicked. Because YOU HAVE MADE the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your dwelling place, there shall NO EVIL befall you, nor any plague or calamity come near your tent." ...it might get that bad that a thousand falls at one side of us and ten thousand falls at the other side of us... but IT SHALL NOT COME NEAR US. Yes, we might see a disaster happening... but because we have taken the time to learn to be in the presence of the Lord... to hide in the secret place, which I can imagine is like a bubble in the spirit, we will be untouched by evil.

I remember years ago the Lord gave me a vision. I saw myself in a bubble with the Lord. When I kept my eyes on Him, I was safe, no arrows of evil were able to touch me as the bubble around me was intact... but as soon as I started to look around me and be moved by what was happening around me, thus allowing fear to overtake me, the evil arrows were able to penetrate through my bubble and harm me. It goes right along with this Psalm for the Psalm begins by telling us how we keep the bubble of protection intact all around us: "He who DWELLS in the secret place of the Most High shall remain stable and fixed under the shadow of the Almighty [Whose power no foe can withstand]. I will SAY of the Lord, He is my Refuge and my Fortress, my God on Him I lean and rely, and in Him I [confidently] trust! For THEN He will deliver you...."

It is completely up to us to MAKE the Lord our Refuge and our Fortress, our Protection. We do it by filling our hearts and our mouths with His promises of protection so that no matter what happens around us, we won't be moved. Verse 14 says: "Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him on high, because he knows and understands My name [has personal knowledge of My mercy, love, and kindness - trusts and relies on Me, KNOWING I will never forsake him, no, never]." ...we have to KNOW in our hearts that no matter what, He will never forsake us, no, never... this knowing makes us safe... and this knowing only comes through spending time with Him. Going to church does not make us safe. This verse says that we are safe when we put our love on Him. The Bible does not say that we show our love for God by going to church. Bible says that those who obey God, love God. Our protection, just like all other blessings of God depend on our obedience. Isaiah 1:19,20 confirms it:

"If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land; but if you refuse and rebel, you will be devoured by the sword." God can't protect us when we refuse His help and rebel... thus we will be devoured by the sword when destruction comes. But if we obey, we will be protected. God can keep us from places that are unsafe when we are led by His Spirit, obeying the Spirit's instructions.

"For in the day of trouble He will hide me in His shelter; in the secret place of His tent will He hide me; He will set me high upon a rock." (Psalm 27:5)
